What is Lymphatic Therapy?
Lymphatic Therapy, also known as Manual Lymphatic Drainage or MLD, is a gentle,
nurturing treatment with profound effects. The lymph system moves in a slow,
rhythmic wave similar to the ocean. By rhythmically and gently stimulating
the lymph vessels that reside directly under the skin, the lymph flow is
increased up to 20 times its normal volume. This increased flow greatly assists
the lymphatic system in collecting proteins, cellular waste, toxins and excess
fluid.
There are many successful applications for MLD. It is ideal for recovery
from surgery (with doctor permission). Surgery is traumatic on the
body and creates swelling around joints, which in turn reduces range of motion.
MLD gently and effectively removes the swelling, increases range of motion,
and assists regeneration of the area.
MLD can provide a “mini facelift.” Facial
MLD increases circulation and regeneration of the skin, decreases
dark circles and puffiness, and can be effective in diminishing
fine lines and wrinkles. It also has proven effective in recovery
following liposuction, and has been successfully used in conjunction
with gentle myofascial release work to diminish cellulite on
the hips and thighs.
What’s
more, MLD is a great way to clear the sinuses and alleviate sinus
headaches, proving highly beneficial during allergy season.
