George Bernard Shaw
famously quipped, “Youth is wasted
on the young.” And it’s true
that, just as age bestows you with that
long-sought-after wisdom and sense of
self, it also brings a few unwanted gifts — like
wrinkles, puffy eyes, and dull, tired-looking
skin.
So, what to do? Everywhere
you turn there’s a new product or treatment
promising to make you look 10 years younger.
Botox, Restylane, chemical peels, microdermabrasion,
cosmetic surgery — the options are a
bit overwhelming. Yet there are natural, and
less invasive, ways to achieve long-lasting
effects.
To be sure, beauty begins
from the inside out, so eating healthy foods,
staying hydrated, getting enough exercise and
sleep, and reducing stress in your life are
key to retaining that youthful glow. But when
you need a little help turning back the hands
of time, why not turn to the healing hands
of lymphatic massage?
Called a “mini-face
lift,” manual lymphatic drainage
(MLD) is a natural and incredibly
gentle way to rejuvenate your skin quickly
and effectively. A highly specialized, delicate
and refined modality, MLD accelerates removal
of waste products that hang around trapped
in the tissues, either due to stress, the environment
or other factors. It also fosters the
healthy exchange of nutrients and oxygen to
replace the toxins that are released during
the procedure. Soothing and relaxing, MLD helps
to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, reduce
puffiness around the eyes, and add that desirable
radiant glow — all within just a few
hours of the session.
During the months of August
and September, I am offering a $5 discount on
all lymphatic facial sessions to encourage you
to experience this incredibly effective style
of massage. Please call with any questions you
may have or to schedule a nurturing session.

Oil: Frankincense

Also
known as “oil from Lebanon,” frankincense
is considered a sacred oil in the Middle
East and has been used in religious ceremonies
for thousands of years. While its name is
derived from the Medieval French word for “real
incense,” frankincense has been used
for its anointing and healing powers since
before the time of Jesus, and was valued
more than gold. It is mentioned in one of
the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus,
an Egyptian text dating from 1550 B.C. that
lists ancient prescriptions and recipes.
Frankincense has been used for depression,
cancer, respiratory infections, inflammation
and immune stimulation, and its fragrance
is believed to increase spiritual awareness,
promote meditation, improve attitude and
uplift spirits.

One of the best ways
to combat aching sore muscles (next
to a massage, that is) is to take a
hot Epsom salt bath. Epsom salts are
sometimes touted as a miracle cure,
helping to get rid of pain and toxins
by simply adding two cups of salts
to a bath filled with hot water.
While I always knew this to be true,
I just learned that Epsom salts — made
of the mineral magnesium sulfate —
are also a sedative for the nervous
system. When magnesium sulfate is absorbed
through the skin (such as in a bath),
it draws toxins from the body, sedates
the nervous system, reduces swelling,
relaxes muscles, acts as a natural
emollient and exfoliator, and much
more. So treat yourself to a
nice hot bath and relax before bedtime
— it’s a great way to assist
in getting that rejuvenating sleep
that sometimes seems elusive in our
busy lives.
Caution: Do
not take hot baths and salt baths (including
Epsom salt baths) if you have heart trouble,
high blood pressure, or are diabetic.
